It’s unreal to me that Osama Bin Laden is dead.

I feel a bit of cognitive dissonance about Osama Bin Laden’s death. It’s weird to me that people are celebrating death. Seeing his picture on every news channel only makes me think about 911, our troops and the wars that have been a part of our lives for the last ten years or so and I don’t feel like celebrating.

Honestly, I just hope that his death will be the catalyst that brings the rest of our troops home. Also I am very proud of our President and the decisions he has had to make recently. I can’t imagine how hard it is to be him.

This morning I woke up to find my hot water not working, my yard flooded and water shooting up out of the pipes outside of my house. Ironically enough my husband left at 6 a.m. earlier this morning to catch a plane to Los Angeles, California. Before he left, he wrote down the plumber’s name and number just in case I needed it.

Our water bill will suck this month.

This can't be good.

Avoid a not fun Saturday by letting your hot and cold water run from your faucets and showers at night when the temperatures drop below freezing.

Despite starting my morning cussing and freaking out, I can honestly say that the situation could have been worse and our plumber is a really nice guy. I appreciate good customer service. I know I can be a lot to deal with when I am upset but our plumber Randy Wofford diffused the situation like a professional. He was really nice to me, came to my house within ten minutes and explained everything to me as he repaired the pipe without acting like I was bothering him. I told him that we left the water running last night and he asked if we left both the hot and cold water running. I told him I wasn’t sure. He said that you have to leave both on and that the hot water will actually burst faster.

Good to know, lesson learned.

Black eyed peas and circumcision…

Happy New Year!

My mother always told us that it is good luck to eat black eyed peas on New Year’s Day. Let’s hope that is true. It should also be good luck that last night was a Blue Moon and my first New Year’s Eve as a married woman!

According to Wikipedia (Side note: I know that referring to Wikipedia is the equivalent to saying according to my neighbor Bob, but for whatever reason I still frequent that site), other New Year’s traditions include:

The dropping of the peach in Atlanta
Polar bear plunges aka groups of people plunging into freezing cold water (sometimes these events are organized to raise money for charity which I get but other than for charity I’m not sure why people would enjoy this)
Feast of the Circumcision of Christ (WTF, what a horrible event to celebrate)
In Europe, people make bonfires using their Christmas trees. I like this idea a lot.
In the Philippines, they celebrate using fireworks and other loud noises to scare away evil spirits and encourage their children to jump around because it was believed it would make you taller.

This morning at around 8 a.m. someone knocked on our door. I hate when people knock on my door. I feel like I am forced to answer it because my car is in the driveway. I hate that. So I looked out our bedroom window and I didn’t recognize the person but he apparently knocked on the door then took 10 steps backward. It was odd. My husband answered the door. When he got back in bed I asked him what that person needed and my husband said that the man just wanted to make sure he could have our toilet. Ben installed a new toilet in our bathroom this weekend and put the old toilet with the trash by the road because today was trash day. I live in an unusual part of town so this doesn’t really surprise me. Nor does it surprise me that my trash wasn’t picked up by the City of Starkville. I wish I knew why he wanted a broken used toilet. I am thankful that we are no longer the neighbors with the toilet in their front yard.

Rainbow Falls

This past weekend (11.20.09-11.22.09), a small group of my friends and I went camping at Dismals Canyon located in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains in Northwest Alabama. As a general rule I try to avoid small towns in Alabama. I am not defending or explaining myself on this matter. But my husband and I were invited on this particular trip and I decided what the hell a. I loved camping as a child and b. I have been to Dismals Canyon a couple of times when I was younger and I thought my husband would really enjoy seeing Dismals Canyon. Sometimes I feel the need to prove to myself that I can do activites outside and that I’m not some freak who only likes watching Law & Order and playing on the internet. After spending my weekend in the freezing cold, sleeping in a tent that caved in during the rain three times, I decided that I am never going camping during Winter again.

Dismals Canyon is a 85 acre National Park Service registered National Landmark which includes a 1.5 mile hiking trail. According to the gift store attendant, Dismals Canyon is owned by a female judge and some lawyers. He said “when the Judge says to Jump, the lawyers ask her how high.”

According to the map given to me by the gift store attendant, former Vice President Aaron Burr hid out in the cave behind Rainbow Falls for months after he killed Alexander Hamilton in a duel. It also said that Jesse James hid out in the canyon.

June is happy about Rainbow Falls.

Don’t judge me for using a pinch collar with June. She doesn’t quite understand “Heel” yet. Also my husband is in a lot of these pictures because I usually have the camera on my person.

Unfriend is the 2009 Word of the Year

Who makes these decisions?

While driving home after work and listening to NPR, I heard that Unfriend is the 2009 New Oxford American Dictionary Word of the Year. I admit that it makes me feel sane to deny a friend request when I have no idea who a person is or when I deny a friend request because I am not friends with that person but i am not sure that I have ever unfriended someone. It also makes me wonder if I have been unfriended at least in the social networking world.

Shouldn’t the Word of the Year be a positive word instead of a word that represents a fault in our society to automatically end friendships instead of working things out? We shouldn’t encourage unfriending, right? Okay I’m done.
